Living the life in Gravenhurst

Papua Barat

Manokwari

We're off to Manokwari, capital of West Papua, though not technically a city. This is the point from which Christianity spread in Papua, and the town itself is now the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manokwari-Sarong. It was actually an outpost of the British East India company for a couple of years, before getting swept up in the Dutch efforts in the area. Along with everywhere else, this all changed in 1942 with the Japanese, who landed 4,000 troops in the area, completely overwhelming the 125 Dutch troops, who took to the mountains and started a campaign of guerilla warfare for the rest of the war.

So off to the mountains!

So long Sarong.

Guerillas in the mist.

Yuck. Who knew a rainforest would be this way.

Where does that go?

A nice little traditional farm. They're dying out.

Man this place is foggy.

That's one big farm.

A clear shot to our destination on the coast.

I bet they have a lot of critters in this place.

Here we go then, Manokwari.

So that's it for West Papua. Tomorrow it's just Papua.
