The Speares

Living the life in Gravenhurst

Chukotka Autonomous Okrug

Anadyr

The goal is to get way down south, through Japan and then someday to Australia. But since the Pacific Ocean is kind of wide we need to go a good deal west before going south. So here we go then. Off to Ugolny. Oddly, Expedia couldn't find me a hotel there. Strange. We'll just have to show up at the Super 8 I guess.

Chilly Provideniya Bay.

And an even chillier Gulf of Anadyr.

That's the direction we should be going. Someday.

Terra Firma again.

Turns out Ugolny, down there, is the military base. That's why not so many hotels. Just a little ways further is the actual town of Anadyr, which has hotels. Let's go see.

Pretty big windfarm, and I presume those tank things are oil.

So this will be our actual stop, Anadyr, after we land at Ugolny. The easternmost city (maybe town) in Russia, as places like Provideniya are more like outposts. Anadyr is 6,400 km by air from moscow, or 3,455 nautical miles for us old timers. That's more than how wide Canada is. Anadyr is a corruption of a Yukaghir word meaning River. Oh, and there are actually some very nice hotels here. Tourism is a thing although you want to go through a company that knows about visas and stuff.

So that's it for today. This leg was pretty much due west; tomorrow we'll start going south a bit. Do zavtra!
