Mew Lake May 5th - 8th 2019
Mew Lake is open year 'round. What that means for early May camping is that, while the rest of everything is losing its snow pack, the campground is a series of snow plow banks. Makes it tricky taking down your tarp, as the snow plow bank you used setting up to get the tarp up nice and high will be several inches or a foot lower when you go to take the tarp down. No bugs though.
Our youngest, Laura, was visiting from Jasper and came along on this trip.
This was the inaugural trip for the little trailer for this year and it behaved admirably. Should take it in for a checkup at some point.
May 4 Getting Ready
The day before is always a flurry of activity getting the trailer ready.
May 5 Mew Lake
After a pleasant drive through Muskoka we got to the park, and almost right away had to slow down for a moose jam. After that it was clear sailing to our camp site and then the work began.

May 6 Track and Tower Trail
The next day was the Track and Tower trail. this is a good one if you're into steps; it has some 133 steps going up a cliff. Winter was still a presence and there was a lot of snow and ice pack on the trail, and at one point a giant slab of ice in a kind of frozen waterfall hanging off a cliff suddenly lost its grip and scared us. Afterwards, back to camp for some burgers (meat and meatless) and a fire.

May 7 Various
We needed internet so started at the visitor's centre and then worked our way back doing some smaller hikes, like the Beaver Pond, Big Pines and The Lookout, then came back to the trailer for some fire roasted veg and duck confit.

May 8 Home
We intended to stay until Friday but there was a rainfall warning for most of Ontario and in particular the park so we decided to bail while everything was mostly dry. Still a good beginning to the camping season and it was great to have a kid along.
