Killarney May 13th - 17th 2019
Killarney is a very pretty park on Georgian Bay and this is our second trip to it. Unfortunately, unless they fix the road going there it will be our last trip.
May 13th What a Back Yard
We showed up without a reservation so we could look around for a good site. The ranger at the gate said go ahead and look around, but check out site #77 which was free and usually isn't. So we went there and while the site itself was just barely useable for a 14 foot trailer, the back yard was easily the best I've ever seen in a park.
May 14th The Crack and Cranberry Bog
The Crack portion of the La Cloche trail is the reason to go to Killarney (that and the fish and chips I guess) and since Tuesday was an exceptionally fine day we decided to cross this one off the list first. Two years ago when we did this hike I found it extremely challenging and about the limit of my mountaineering skills. Since then we've hiked Gros Morne and several trails in Jasper so now I know this is a pretty but largely not challenging hike. The twenty minutes or so in the actual Crack are challenging, especially when the wasps are out sunning themselves and you have to avoid pissing them off, but especially now that they have the route well marked the rest of the hike is a walk in the woods as they say.
The Crack Trail Head | Starts out like a standard trail | They're doing improvements to the trail |
This year it's much better for markers | Half way up | Start of The Crack |
Choosing a route | There really is no route | This is where the wasps were |
Made it to the top | View to the south east | View to the south west |
Time for one more quick trail | Not really sure what this is | Bridge over the beavers |
Some giant birds back there making an enormous noise | Time to go back to our little tiny campsite | With the amazing back yard |
May 15th Granite Ridge and Chikanishing
Wednesday was supposed to be rainy and therefore Fish & Chips day, but while the weather wasn't spectacular like Tuesday it wasn't too too bad. So we crossed the road and did Granite Ridge in the morning. Then back to home base for lunch and then off to Chikanishing. You can walk to that trail but it's quite a piece so we decided to drive to the trail head.
Chilly Deb | Chilly campsite | Granite Ridge trail head |
Nice view of Georgian Bay | And of the La Cloche mountains | Chikanishing |
I really couldn't tell these guys apart if I caught one | This trail is really hard to follow | Although Deb was good at finding the little marks on the rocks |
Made it to Georgian Bay | Rugged | Slippery when wet |
Clouds upon clouds of little black flies |
May 16th Rain Day
Chilly and rainy on Thursday, so all we really did was go to town for some fish'n'chips.
Chilly Deb | Chilly campsite | Fish and Chip joint |
Fresh whitefish | Turns out there's a trail to the waterfront from our back yard | Suppertime |
May 17th Home
Friday of the long weekend - time to go home. Unfortunately the gravel trucks were trying to get done whatever they do prior to the long weekend so they were going really fast and spraying gravel everywhere. We knew about the cracked windshield we got from one guy but weren't we surprised when we got home and found out he had also totalled one of the windows in the trailer. We're still waiting to find out what that's going to cost, and this will probably prevent us from ever going to Killarney again. That road sucks, and the gravel trucks really suck.
Nice new garbage bag window | To replace the totalled origional |
