Living the life in Gravenhurst

Bon Echo Sep 23rd - 27th 2019

Our youngest son, John, wanted to go camping with us to enjoy some fresh air and scenery not easily found in Toronto. The weather was in doubt everywhere all week, so we stayed home Sun day night. By Monday, Bon Echo wasn't looking too bad and john had never been there, so off we went.

Sep 23rd Staggered to Beach Late at Night

It's a bit of a hike to Bon Echo. That and the fact that I forgot the second cooler, which meant that we had to stop in Bancroft for more beer and some fresh meat, put us a bit behind schedule. So after setting up and creating a truly impressive tarp structure for the upcoming rain, it was time to eat our Bancroft steaks with some little potatoes and play a game before retiring to the fire. Since we had to do something to justify steaks, we all decided to stmuble down to the beach late at night with some beers.

Sep 24th Abes and Essens

The weather forecast seemed to be changing by the hour, but today was the day that seemed best for doing the 17 km trail around the little lakes to the north of the park. Afterwards it was supposed to be hamburgs, but I forgot to take them out of the freezer so it was good old hotdogs instead.

Trail Head Mushrooms Normally an island, but the water was low
A lot of fungi You can see the normal water level Near one of the backcountry sites

Sep 25th Paddle Boat and Kayak; High Pines Trail

There was a bit of sun today, so we decided to walk down to the beach (about the only spot to get bars on your phone and check email) and then do some water stuff. John likes kayaks, so he got one of those. Older people need something more stable, so we got a paddle boat. I've got to get a water camera sometime. As it is, no pictures of the boating adventure. Afterwards we did the High Pines trail, which I'm sure used to have a spectcular lookout. Now those damned high pines are in the way. Supper was the hamburgers, and they were good.

Sep 26th Heavy Rain

A bit of rain overnight. It cleared up somewhat by lunch, so we had our regular rainy day lunch of instant Thai soup, this time with the addition of some smoked trout and crackers. The weather didn't look too bad afterwards, so we did the Shield Trail (4.8 km) and got home about a half hour before a truly impressive thunderstorm. It was so dark reading was difficult outside under the tarp so Deb went into the trailer to read. Me and john braved it out under the tarp; mostly I wanted to keep an eye on my tarp because it kept threatening to pool up which would have been a noisy, expensive and watery disaster.

Lots of mushrooms An unwise tree Gloomy
And then sunny Last frog of the season? Nice fall shot

Sep 27th Tour Boat, Cliff Top Hike, then Home

Normally we'd just pack up and blow on home day, but John had never been to Bon Echo before and so had never done the tour boat or cliff hike. So we packed up and vacated the campsite, and then did those things. We were a little late getting home as a result, by about 6:00. House sure was cold. It was set to AC which was appropriate when we left but it had since become furnace time.
