Arrowhead July 21st - 26th 2019
We finally got our trailer back from the trailer hospital after the window broke in Killarney in May. The window was back-ordered apparently, which happens, but we had to continually hound them down there to give us updates and finally just told them we were going to come get our trailer. Then suddenly it all came together, except they didn't fix some things that they said they did and blew up the battery fuse while they were at it. I think we'll find a different trailer hospital fo future.
Anyhow, with our trailer back in service it was off on another camping adventure, and staying close to home seemed wise while we found out if my electrical skills were still all that they used to be, which never was very much.
July 21 Mayflower Trail
Sunday was a day of packing up and heading out. When we got to the site the weather still looked wonderful for the week so we went without the tarp. That saves a good hour or two setting up. After that we did a little recon of the park although we've been there a few times. We ended up on the Mayflower trail which is short, then back home for some fresh BBQ kebobs and beer by the fire. We also struggled to remember the details of how to play backgammon, as it has been a while.
July 22 Paddle and Swim
New to this trip is our little inflatible fishing boat, so today we went for an aquatic adventure in Mayflower Lake. It's stocked with rainbow trout, but they seemed smarter than us. So we had a good paddle, but no fish. After that and some lunch it was over to Arrowhead lake to try our luck. We saw one big one jump, but by the time we got to where he was jumping he was no longer jumping. Still no luck fishing, but at least there's not so many leeches in Arrowhead so we had a swim too.
July 23 Centennial Ridges
The road getting to this trail was closed when we went to Mew Lake earlier this year, so we decided to cross it off the list on this trip. It's considered one of the more challenging trails in Algonquin but now that we are experienced Jasper and Kluane hikers we can do it pretty easy. Very pretty hike, and especially nice this time as there weren't so many people. Last time we did the hike it was so busy that parking was actually an issue, and a couple that had driven down with their RV on the back couldn't turn around to get out until the parking lot thinned out, so they were just camping on the side of the road for the day.
One of the lookouts | Lots of rocks | And lakes |
July 24 Another Paddle
Today was a walk over to the store for bread (they were out) and then back for lunch. The afternoon was a much more ambitious paddle in search of the elusive bass that are supposed to be in Arrowhead. We made it all the way across the lake, trying to stay out of the way of all of the various kayaks and paddle boards that congest the lake. No wonder the fish are reclusive. We saw a couple of those big black birds that eat fish up in a tree, so there must be fish somewhere.
July 25 Limberlost
Limberlost is a neat place - it's kind of a private park with lots of trails. None of the trails are too challenging, and there are lots of bugs, but still a nice change.
The trails are pretty easy | Lots of boardwalks | A giant quartz boulder |
