Chubu
Nagoya
Well it's a fine, fine day for an aeroplane flight. The goal is another artificial island airport, Chubu.
Man this place is big. Almost 10 million people.
Way off in the distance is Mount Fuji. We'll be there in a half an hour. |
But in the meantime let's talk about James Clavell. Stretching out into the sea is the Izu Peninsula, where the fictional John Blackthorne was shipwrecked a few months before the Battle of Sekigahara. The real William Adams was the English pilot of the Dutch ship Liefde (Charity) which barely made it to Usuki on Kyushu Island (nowhere near here) in April of 1600. He and his first mate Jan Joosten were retained in Japan by Shogun Tokugawa leyasu as advisors while the rest of the few survivors went back to the Dutch Republic to initiate trade. He died at age 55 and was buried at Nagasaki-ken. James Clavell then went on to write, produce and direct To Sir With Love. |
Which brings us to Mount Fuji, the highest and probably most climbed peak in Japan. It hasn't erupted in 300 years, but is still considered an active strato volcano so you want to get your hike in before it goes off. |
Criss crossed with trails.
Anyhow, moving on. |
Another one of those test tracks. Probably Toyota. Everything around Aichi is owned by Toyota, and we're right near Aichi. |
This is Nagoya, home to the Sake District. |
Prefab islands everywhere. |
Ours is just down here. |
There we go. Central Japan International. See you tomorrow. |
