Hokkaido
Chitose
This morning we're going to pop up over the mountains and go see where Chiyotaikai Ryƫji came from.
Land of the rising sun. |
And mountains. Somewhere to the left is Kamuiekuuchikaushi-yama, an Ainu word meaning "Mountain So Steep a Bear Would Tumble Down It". Somewhat odd to have a word for something like that. The Ainu must have had an incredible vocabulary. |
Ikeda. It's always sunny here. |
Obihiro. Getting close to the big mountains. |
Lot of farms here. They're big on dairy, even going so far as to put a pat of butter on your ramen noodles. |
Here we go. Time to find a nice valley going our way.
There we go. Chitose. Originally called Shikot by the Ainu people. But that sounded too much like "dead bones" in Japanese, so they changed the name. Away off on the horizon is Sapporo. Might swing by there tomorrow on the way south. |
That's about it for today. Tomorrow we're into a different region. Toodles! |
