Kamchatka Krai
Yelizovo
A much nicer day I must say. Today it's pretty much due south and we're going to an actual place, Yelizovo.
Actually, now that we can see it, Milkovo looks like quite a well maintained town, having a good road and everything for a normal life. |
We're in a giant valley and it looks like there's even agriculture here. |
Which is surprising considering where we are. |
Coming up on a bunch of vaolcanoes, Zhupanovsky V., Koryaksky V. and Avachinsky V. |
Let's take a little detour and look at one. |
This is Koryaksky Volcano. Together with its neighbour, Avachinsky V., it has been designated as a Decade Volcano, which means it has the potential to be super nasty, due to its proximity to a built-up area. There are only 16 such volcanoes in the world. And two of them are right here. |
Going up. |
This is the view from the top, overlooking the built-up area (Petropavlosk-Kamchatskiy) over to the right around Mokhovya Bay. To the left is the other nasty volcano, Avachinsky V. It is an active stratovolcano, which means it could really blow its top. One of the most dangerous aspects of a really good stratovolcano explosion is the Lahar, a volcanic mudflow. You can see from the slope of this volcano that any Lahars are likely to flow straight down to the populated region around the bay. |
But enough doom and gloom. Here's our stop for the night, Yelizovo. Only one restaurant they say. Probably a Boston Pizza. |
Tomorrow we leave the peninsula and start down the Kurils. See ya. |
