The Speares

Living the life in Gravenhurst

Alaska

Fairbanks

This morning it's off to the States. The goal is Fairbanks on the Tanana River. No idea what we'll find enroute, this is all new territory for me. Off we go!

Just the other side of Dawson is a little ferry which leads to the highway to Little Gold Creek, a place that has no permanent residents and is closed in the winter. All it really is is a border crossing into the States. Sounds like a hoot. Let's go see.

This is the Top of the World Highway.

Oops, must've missed Little Gold Creek. This is Boundary Airport on the States side.

Time to go up a bit.

And here we have Fairbanks. Fairbanks is at 64.8 degrees north, whereas Dawson is at 64.06. So it is in fact north to Alaska. Mostly west though. Part of Russia (although not a town at the time) until Russia sold the whole place to the States in 1867, the year of confederation. Likely not related events. Fairbanks is sometimes the starting point for the Iditarod, although mostly it's Anchorage. Has to do with how much snow there is in Anchorage.

So much for today's flight. Tomorrow we're more or less (sort of) following the Iditarod route out of here to romantic Koyukuk. See ya!
